The roots of Mosaic Mental Health are closely bound with the humanist philosophies of the Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture and its Leader of 40 years, Dr. Matthew Ies Spetter, Ph.D. A survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Dr. Spetter escaped Nazi-occupied Europe and immigrated to the United States, where he became an ethics and philosophy lecturer, teacher, and leader of mental health and family counseling in Riverdale. After founding Riverdale Mental Health Association in 1959, Dr. Spetter served on its Board for many years following. Dr. Spetter passed away in 2012 at the age of 91, but his powerful influence lives on.
